It's my belated birthday gift, says Bonus Challenge winner who goes home with mini-folding bicycle
It was his birthday on Wednesday, but Mr Leong Hon Cheong did not celebrate it.
"Aiyah, no celebrations lah. It was like any other day. I just continued working," said the taxi driver who just turned 64. "Driving a taxi is a tough life, you know."
Yesterday, Mr Leong found himself a winner in The New Paper Bonus Challenge when he bagged a Mini folding bicycle.
He drove to the TNP office in his taxi to collect his belated birthday present, brimming with joy.
"This is the only bright spark (during) my birthday this year. I think my birthday brought me luck," he said.
He has no idea what to do with the prize as he does not cycle.
"My children are too old to play with a bicycle and my grandchildren are far too young.
"I think I'll just keep it for myself for now," he said.
Mr Leong is a self-professed fan of TNP, preferring it over other news sources for its focus on local news, he said.
He praised it for its convenient size, eye-catching stories and ease of reading the paper, adding that he "reads it every morning over coffee".
Since the start of the Bonus Challenge, he has been purchasing multiple copies of TNP on Mondays to maximise his chances of winning.
He said: "I bought 10 copies because in the past, I kept missing out on the prize by just one number.
"This is the first time I won something from the challenge, so I'm very happy."
He joked that he is "looking forward" to today's copy of TNP - not only because he will be in it.
"I still have nine more chances. I want to win the jackpot," he said, laughing.
Mr Leong was the sole winner yesterday, with no one coming forward to claim the jackpot cash prize.
It snowballs to $9,000 today.
