Johor sees 97% surge in influenza-like illness cases

The number of influenza-like illness (ILI) cases in Johor has risen by more than 97 per cent.

State health and environment committee chairman Ling Tian Soon said the number of ILI cases reported in the sixth epidemiological week (ME6) from Feb 2 to 8 was 807.

"This is a 97.3 per cent jump from 409 cases recorded in ME5 (Jan 26 to Feb 1), but no new clusters have been reported so far," he said.

"In general, ILI and upper respiratory tract infections are common in Malaysia without being seasonal," he added. "Such illnesses usually require monitoring and staying away from others."

ILI is an acute respiratory illness with symptoms similar to influenza.

Mr Ling said the health situation in Johor remains under control and would be continuously monitored by the Health Department.

He advised the public to also observe good hygiene and personal care, and refrain from going to crowded places if they feel unwell.

"Remember to cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing," he said, urging the public to get vaccinated for influenza. THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
