'Maid on crutches': Grab driver suspended after mocking passenger and texting while driving

A woman posted that the driver was chatting on WhatsApp while driving and appeared to mock her daughter in the messages.

A mother has called out a Grab driver for mocking her daughter, who was on crutches, and for distracted driving during a recent ride.

In a Facebook post on Sept 23, Eliza Neo said her daughter had been waiting with the family's helper for the booked car, but the driver insisted he was already at the pick-up point.

"My daughter, who is on crutches, waited with our helper for her Grab," she wrote. "Driver was nowhere in sight but insisted he was already there. My girl even apologised for not spotting his car - yet he still slapped on a $3 late fee. When in fact, it was us who were waiting!"

She added that during the ride, the driver was chatting on WhatsApp with his friends while driving and appeared to mock her daughter in the messages.

According to photos, the messages included, 'maid on crutches', 'LOL' and 'employer never follow'.

Eliza described the experience as unsafe and disrespectful, calling it 'completely unacceptable'.

At the end of the trip, her elder daughter, who is a nurse, received her sister. Eliza said the entire experience was distressing for her daughter.

"Mocking a passenger with mobility issues?" she asked. "Distracted driving? Wrongful late fee? This is unsafe, disrespectful and completely unacceptable."

In response to a Stomp query, Grab said: "We sincerely apologise for the unpleasant experience the customer had on the Grab ride. At Grab, we do not tolerate discriminatory behaviour or language on our platform whether from our driver-partners or passengers.

"In this case, we have spoken to the driver-partner and have reminded him of adhering to our Code of Conduct. As this is his first incident with no prior record, he will be suspended for one week.

"We want to assure our customers that this case is not reflective of the vast majority of our driver-partners.

"We would also like to take this opportunity to remind both driver-partners and passengers to treat one another with respect at all times.

"Should they need help, they can always reach out to Grab for assistance."
