Majority of outrage of modesty and voyeurism cases take place at home
The Annual Crime Report 2024 shows that physical crime cases remained stable in 2024, with 19,969 cases compared to 19,966 in 2023. While there was a decline in theft in dwellings and outrage of modesty cases, crimes such as shop theft and voyeurism saw an increase.
Shop theft cases increased from 3,939 in 2023 to 4,237 in 2024, making up 21 per cent of total physical crimes.
The rise is attributed to improved CCTV surveillance and facial recognition technology, helping retailers detect more offences. Stolen items were mostly personal care products, food, and cosmetics.
Top locations for shop theft included NTUC Fairprice (Jurong Point, Ang Mo Kio Hub), Watsons (Suntec City, Toa Payoh Central) and Cold Storage (Plaza Singapura, Bugis Junction).
Outrage of modesty cases dropped from 1,528 in 2023 to 1,427 in 2024.
Most cases occurred in residential premises (356 cases), followed by public transport (158), shopping complexes (135), and public entertainment outlets (103).
Over half of the cases involved culprits known to the victims.
Voyeurism cases rose from 476 in 2023 to 519 in 2024, with the majority of incidents happening at home (162 cases) and most perpetrators being known to the victims.
Other locations included shopping complexes (80 cases) and public transport (69 cases).
Senior Assistant Commissioner Gregory Tan, director of operations, highlighted how technological advancements and increased investment in technological tools will help enable swift identification of offenders.
"We are confident that with the community's and stakeholders' strong support for a safe and secure Singapore, physical crime will continue to remain low," he said.
"Together, we can reinforce Singapore's standing as one of the world's safest nations."
