Nur Alya Nabilah Zamri, 11, was crying in pain for an hour after her leg got stuck in a manhole grating.

The Year Three pupil at SK Titi Gajah, was with her grandparents in Taman Aman buying breakfast when her right foot slipped into and became stuck in the opening of the grate.

“It was very painful. Many people came to help me,” she said after receiving outpatient treatment at the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital.

Senior fire officer Mohamad Mahyuddin from the Alor Setar Fire and Rescue Department said it took about four minutes to free the stricken girl using a hydraulic spreader.

This is not the first time a child has fallen into the grating.

Ku Om Ku Murat, 61, a food stall operator said children frequently get their legs caught there.

“I hope the city council will do something to prevent such incidents from happening again.”
