Man clashes with McDonald's store manager over 48-min order
Stomper Tay said he was initially ignored by the manager.
McDonald's Singapore has apologised after a customer expressed unhappiness about the long wait for his order, which resulted in him having a dispute with a store manager.
Stomper Tay said he visited McDonald's Hougang 1 on June 7 and placed a takeaway order at 10.28pm, but it was only ready for collection 48 minutes later.
A staff member responded "rudely" when questioned about this, Tay alleged.
Tay sent feedback to McDonald's about the incident, which he also shared with Stomp: "I was patiently waiting since the store was busy.
"At about 10.55pm, I realised that the groups of people who had ordered around the same time as me were already long gone.
"I asked an auntie at the counter about it. She told me to wait for my order as it was still being prepared. After 10 minutes, I asked her again. She told me to wait.
"Finally, at around 11.16pm, my order was ready.
"I requested to speak to the duty manager. The auntie told him about it, but he turned his head, ignored me and carried on doing his things. After that, the auntie called him again, and he unwillingly came to the counter.
"I felt that the kitchen had forgotten my order, so I asked him to explain why I had to wait 45 minutes for fast food.
"He immediately started with a rude attitude, opening his eyes wide and talking like a gangster. He challenged me and asked why I couldn't see that the store was busy, are the kitchen staff dancing?
"He also asked if I wanted to refund my order. I told him I was not going to do that since I'd already waited so long and my family were waiting for the food for our birthday meal.
"I asked him why he was so rude. He told me that I did not give him 'face' in front of other customers and staff. I was so surprised as I just wanted to know why it took so long to prepare my meals.
"I asked for his name as I wanted to write in to complain. He threw his name tag on the desk. When I wanted to take a picture of it, he timidly snatched it back and asked me to take a photo of the 'shift manager on duty' (I don't understand what's the difference).
"All these can be seen from your CCTV cameras. Is this the way McDonald's trains your manager? Is this the standard of your trained staff?"
"It was definitely a forgotten order and the manager was not apologetic at all."
Tay, who described himself as "a very disappointed customer" in his feedback, described the manager's attitude as "frightening".
In response to a Stomp query, a McDonald's spokesperson said: "We're sorry to hear about what happened and have since reached out to make things right.
"Consistent service matters to us, and we've taken steps - including reinforcing training with our team - to help prevent this from happening again."
Tay confirmed with Stomp on July 11 that McDonald's had contacted him and given him a refund for the order.
He added: "Social media power is very fantastic."
