Man fakes kidnapping so he could party without girlfriend

This article is more than 12 months old

One man wanted to continue partying so badly that he lied to his girlfriend about getting kidnapped.

A British man informed his girlfriend he had a debt of US$82 (S$102) and was kidnapped because of it.

Unfortunately, the girlfriend took it seriously and called the police.

Police were not pleased when they discovered the kidnapping was a hoax. They called it "one of the most foolish and irresponsible incidents" that has ever happened.

"Considerable resources and time then went into finding this man, who it transpires made the entire thing up so he could stay out and party," Detective Inspector Jo Clawson for the Greater Manchester Police told Sky News.

According to the BBC, the 32-year-old was later found by police after they checked security cameras near his home.

A friend of the man was arrested on suspicion of the kidnapping but was later released after the ruse was revealed.

The excuse, as ridiculous as it seems, has actually been used before.

A Texas man in 2013 told the same lie so that he could go out drinking with his friends. He said he did it because he was afraid of his wife.

"We have people file false reports all the time, and we put them in jail for it," Hidalgo County Sheriff Guadalupe Treviño told The Monitor at the time.

"But I've never had someone do it just to get out of the house."
