He thought he had turned into an overnight billionaire.

Real estate employee Li Lin, 26, was about to transfer funds into his savings account on Jan 5 when he had the shock of his life.

An eight-billion yuan (S$1.7 billion) deposit showed up on the computer screen that morning.

The resident in Chuzhou city, Anhui province didn't know what to do, so he kept staring at the screen in disbelief.

But that same night at about 11pm, the money was transferred out of his account.

Baffled, Mr Li went to the bank seeking an explanation and staff said the error might have occurred during an upgrade of the bank's computer system.

The bank apologised for the mistake.
