Man jailed 10 days for releasing pet bird, stealing packages

The man also took packages, floor mats, and bicycle parts in two instances of theft.

A 48-year-old man has been jailed for 10 days after releasing a pet bird, and stealing delivery packages and bicycle accessories on two separate occasions.

Mohamed Kamarul Halim (transliterated) faced a total of six charges, including committing mischief, dishonest misappropriation of property, and theft.

He pleaded guilty to three charges, with the remaining three taken into consideration during sentencing.

The first incident occurred on Aug 9, 2024, at 6am.

While walking past a unit at Block 461, Choa Chu Kang Avenue 4, Kamarul noticed three unlocked birdcages hanging outside, each containing an Indian White-eye.

On the spur of the moment, he opened one of the cages and released the bird, causing the owner a loss of $350. The incident was captured on CCTV, and the victim filed a police report that afternoon.

More than a month later, Kamarul was loitering outside Block 535 Bukit Batok Street 52, when he saw a package and two used floor mats placed outside a unit.

He took the mats and the package, which contained a phone holder, a multi-tool set, and a men's grooming kit, amounting to a total value of $51. The theft was also caught on camera, and the items have not been recovered.

The following morning, Kamarul was loitering at the Marina Bay Sands bicycle parking area, where he stole a bicycle saddle bag, a spare headlamp valued at $120, a front light, and a rear light from a bicycle. The items have also not been recovered.

Kamarul was subsequently arrested on June 25, 2025.
