Man jailed for beating mother, leaving her with severe facial injuries
The woman's injuries were so severe that her mobile phone's facial recognition software could not recognise her.
A man who assaulted his mother when she confronted him over his suspected drug use, leaving her with injuries so severe that her mobile phone's facial recognition software could not recognise her, has been jailed for nine months.
Shin Min Daily News reported that the beating left the 56-year-old woman with a broken nose and in a semi-conscious state. Even after 10 days, her mobile phone could not recognise her.
Zofiq (transliterated), 33, was sentenced to nine months in prison, after pleading guilty on Sept 15 to one charge of voluntarily causing hurt.
Mother's suspicions of his drug abuse
Zofiq, previously imprisoned for drug offenses, was released in June 2023 and went to live with his mother and stepfather.
On Feb 28 at around 5pm, Zofiq's mother heard noises coming from his room. Entering to check in on him, she found him struggling to open his eyes and suspected that he had been taking drugs again.
She recorded the incident on her phone, before confronting Zofiq. He brushed off the incident as the side effects of the painkillers he had been taking and went back to sleep.
Outburst after mother's accusation
When he awoke, Zofiq was angered by the thought of his mother's suspicions.
He walked out of his room and scolded her for filming him, demanding to see the footage even as he denied taking drugs.
When his mother refused, Zofiq knocked her to the ground and furiously punched and kicked her face for 20 minutes.
When he saw that his mother was bleeding profusely from her head, Zofiq called for an ambulance. even as he continued verbally abusing her.
When paramedics arrived on the scene, his mother was semi-conscious. She was conveyed to Sengkang General Hospital for emergency treatment.
Beatings left mother unrecognisable
Medical examinations revealed severe swelling and bleeding around the woman's eyes, a fractured nose with lacerations, and hematomas on her forehead and the back of her head.
Zofiq was arrested on May 13, while his mother was hospitalised for four days and subsequently granted 15 days of sick leave.
