Man lives for two months with bullet in his heart

This article is more than 12 months old

We didn't think this was possible but a man in India lived with a bullet in his heart for two months.

Mr Bharat Sharma, 32, was shot twice in July during a bank robbery in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

He underwent surgery to remove a bullet lodged in his waist, but local surgeons refused to take out the one in his heart, fearing he would die instantly, reported The Times Of India

Mr Sharma travelled to Ahmedabad on Tuesday for surgery to remove the .20 calibre bullet lodged near the apex of his heart’s left ventricle.

'Pure destiny'

Cardiac surgeon Anil Jain said he and his team of two performed a "complicated" three-hour operation to remove the bullet and stitch up the heart.

Said Dr Jain: "The bullet was stuck horizontally between the valves. Also, since the patient had lost lot of blood after the incident, we had to be very careful.

"How the patient survived and reached us is pure destiny."

Dr Jain said Mr Sharma would be able to return to work in another month after his recovery.
