Miley urges New York Governor to spend on homeless youth
Think Miley Cyrus, think outrageous outfits, naked pictures, twerking (of course) and just some outright weirdness.
But there is another side to the pop star.
While some thought that Miley Cyrus asking a homeless man to accept her trophy at last year's Video Music Awards was a stunt, Cyrus takes the issue of homeless youth very seriously.
She set up her Happy Hippie Foundation specifically to help young people without homes an on the streets.
On Thursday, the 22-year-old posted a heartfelt letter on Instagram that she has sent to the New York Governor Andrew Cuomo asking for $4.75 million (S$6.54 million) in the state budget to help protect homeless youth.
According Cyrus' figures, the numbers are rising and shelters cannot cope.
Cryus writes:
“As you probably know, 1.6 million kids across the US are homeless, and the problem is especially serious in New York.
Between 2009 and 2012, the number of kids turned away from homeless youth shelters in New York grew from 570 to more than 5,000.”
Explaining the plight of these teens on the streets, Cyrus wrote:
They've been kicked out of their homes or are fleeing abusive parents. And too often they're forced into dangerous situations just to find a place to sleep
Time reports that since starting the foundation, Cyrus has been raising funds by hosting backyard concerts with a variety of guest artists - from punk band Against Me to Ariana Grande
