A man punched his elderly father repeatedly and tried to poison him after being asked to repay a sum of money.

The man, in his 30s, ran up a debt of RM50,000 (S$19,700) several years ago. Back then, his father dug into his life savings to help pay off the son's debtors.

On Wednesday, the man's father - a retiree in his 60s - asked that he return the money.

Enraged by the request, the man started pummelling his father with his fists.

He also tried to force his father to drink a glass of poison, but the elderly widower managed to get away, China Press reported.

The incident took place in their house in Miri, Sarawak.

The father, who suffered facial and bodily injuries, made a police report.
