A 16-year-old girl buried her mother's jewellery and lied to police that they had been robbed.

Malaysia police suspected something was amiss when the teen claimed the robbers also took RM20,000 (S$7,800) from her.

She was arrested on Wednesday.

The teen's 51-year-old mother had made a police report on Tuesday after finding that her jewellery was missing from their apartment.

Armed with knives

Kajang Assistant Commissioner Abdul Rashid Abdul Wahab said the girl claimed that two people armed with knives stormed their unit at about 3.30pm.

"She claimed that the two forced her to tell them where her mother kept her jewellery. She claimed that the robbers took RM20,000 in cash and RM20,000 in jewellery and valuables."

"We suspected something amiss over the amount of cash kept at home," he said on Thursday.

Police interrogated the girl, who eventually confessed that she had buried the jewellery in the apartment compound.

The girl, who has a history of running away from home, has been remanded.
