M'sia condo security guard who molested woman had just been released from prison

This article is more than 12 months old

The security guard who molested a student in the lift of a condominium in Ampang, Kuala Lumpur last month had just been released from prison.

The Malaysian had been out of jail for only five days before he was hired.

He worked there for just a week before trying to grope a resident.

Police have launched a hunt for the man, who was previously jailed for house breaking, said Assistant Commissioner Khairuldin Saad.

Since the incident, the man has not returned to the condominium. He had apparently been hired based on the recommendation of a resident.

Employed without any vetting

ACP Khairuldin questioned how the condominium management could allow a convict just out of jail to don a security guard's uniform.

He said: "This really should not have happened. Their guard was employed without any vetting by police or the Home Ministry as required, too.

"If they had checked, they would have known that he has a criminal record.

"If action is to be taken against the management, it will probably be the ministry’s role. We can only advise security employers so that they hire the right kind of people."

No details on man

The victim said at a press conference earlier this week that the man had tried to cover her mouth and drag her back into the lift when she was exiting.

He fled via the staircase when the woman’s aunt heard her screams and rushed to help her, she said.

When she reported the incident to the condominium management, she was told that they had no details of the man as he had only been working for a week.

Police have identified the man and will keep “hunting and harassing” him until he was found, said ACP Khairuldin.
