Russian footballer shot dead in his car

Gasan Magomedov was shot dead while driving in the volatile North Caucasian region of Dagestan.

The 20-year-old's club, Russian second division club Anzhi Makhachkala, said that Magomedov was hit by a hail of bullets while driving close to his home on Saturday night. 

Reports said that Magomedov died in the ambulance while being taken to hospital. 

No arrests have been made so far and the motive for the attack is still unclear.

His club said: "He was one of the club's youth team main players."

Dagestan has a has been known to see gun battles between Russian forces and rebels.

For a number of years Anzhi would house star players, such as Samuel Eto'o, in the capital Moscow, to keep them away from the risks in Dagestan.

Eto'o was at the club from 2011 - 2013. It was during this period that the club challenged for the Russian Premier League Title. But the clubs fortunes changed after billionaire Suleyman Kerimov withdrew his financial backing.

Magomedov played in midfield for Anzhi’s youth and reserve teams and the club sent their ‘deepest condolences’ to his family.

“We grieve together with everyone who was dear to Gasan,” the club's general director Sergey Korablev said.

“I hope the police quickly find the killers and they suffer just punishment.”​
