Seeking: iPhone robber turned teen killer

This article is more than 12 months old

A 15-year-old girl died trying to stop a robber from running away with her iPhone, reported the LA Times.

Police are seeking information on the man.

He is described as a Hispanic man in his late 20s to early 30s. About 5 feet 10 inches tall, he wearing a black baseball hat, white tank top and light colored jeans. (See sketch below).

A statement released by Santa Ana Police Department in Los Angeles said the girl was walking with her 7-year-old sister last Thursday (July 3) when a man walked up and asked the teen for the time.

He then snatched her iPhone and ran off.

The teenager, Ruby Rubio, gave chase but the man dashed to the passenger seat of a waiting car with an unknown driver. She jumped onto the car as it pulled away.

"As they drove off, they swerved, she was hanging on to the trunk," said Santa Ana Police spokesman Anthony Bertagna. "She fell off (and) struck her head."

The teen died in hospital two days later, on July 5.

Perhaps even more tragic was the fact that the iPhone was later recovered by the police, the Los Angeles Times reported.
