TNP SUVival Challenge 2015: Age no barrier for this family
In most families, a seven-month-old baby would not be allowed on an off-road SUV challenge.
Not the Ng family.
Little Nicole Ng will join her family later this month on their third TNP SUVival Challenge as the competition's youngest participant.
Together with her parents, Mr Ng We Keat and Madam Sam Chiew Mun, her siblings, Amanda, 12, and Wyatt, three, and grandaunt, Mrs Ng Guan Choo, they form the competition's largest team.
Mr Ng, 38, said: "It's important for me to have everyone there, the enjoyment will be different if I went with a friend or only my oldest daughter. It would be a lot less meaningful."
His wife, 35, a Chinese language teacher, said: "We are a family so we go and have fun together."
Mr Ng, a PE teacher, will be driving their vehicle during the challenge.
He said: "When I was younger, my dad took me to places like the waterfalls in Kota Tinggi and I enjoyed myself. It's about exposing the kids to nature. It's important for them to learn to enjoy nature and all it has to offer."
Having travelled together to national parks such as Endau Rompin National Park in Malaysia for off-road trips, the Ng family have experience on their side.
In fact, their seven-month-old younger daughter has already been on two trips.
Mr Ng said: "With all the trips (we've been on), we definitely have an advantage with the off-road driving. But it's not about winning, it's about participating as a family."
UNAFRAID
Even Mrs Ng, 66, who is the oldest participant in the competition so far, is ready for a weekend of adventure and unafraid of the challenges that await.
"I'm not really afraid of anything. The safety measures have been good every time we joined," she said.
The organisers have said that this year's TNP SUVival Challenge will be the most intense and gruelling so far.
But the team is prepared.
They drove up to Malaysia last weekend to get an update on the conditions.
Said Mr Ng: "Having young children on board, there are many things I have to watch out for like how fast I can go and the challenges that may be too difficult, but the important thing is that everyone is there."
Now in its 10th edition, the TNP SUVival Challenge takes participants on an off-road adventure in Malaysia where they will have to navigate their way through checkpoints with the help of clues.
Contestants will take part in games and challenges, and also battle off-road terrain with muddy ditches, steep slopes and uneven ground.
There is also $70,000 in cash and other prizes to be won.
Registration closes on Sunday.
