Penang bans foreigners from cooking hawker fare

This article is more than 12 months old

Penang's executive council has introduced a new rule for hawkers: Starting 2016, only locals will be allowed to cook local delicacies.

Foreigners will be banned from becoming "main cooks" at hawker stalls to ensure the local taste and flavour of the state's renowned hawker fare are retained, said Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.

The rule will apply to hawkers operating from coffee shops, hawker complexes, shopping mall food courts, as well as those in the streets.

Hawkers will be given a one-year grace period starting from Jan 1 next year to adjust to the change.

"This will be done in stages, not immediately, " said Mr Lim at a press conference in Komtar on Friday.

"We will also insert this condition in their licence. Failure to abide by it will result in action being taken."
