Above all, Mr Lee Kuan Yew was a fighter.

This was what Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said of the elder statesman as he delivered a eulogy at the state funeral service on Sunday (March 29).

He said the late Mr Lee was the original Singapore Roar: passionate, formidable and indomitable.

PM Lee said Mr Lee "saw us through many battles"  battle for merger against communists, the fight within Malaysia, Separation, and the withdrawal of British forces.

"Because he never wavered, we didn’t falter. Because he fought, we took courage and fought with him, and prevailed."

He recalled what a woman told him in 1996.

"Tell Lee Kuan Yew I will always support him. I was born in 1948, and I am 48 years old. This was 1996. I know what he has done for me and Singapore."

He added: "She and her generation knew that '跟着李光耀走不会死的' – if you follow Lee Kuan Yew, you will survive."
