Rifle-like object found off Sembawang
When she saw a man fishing a trash bag out of the sea, she turned to her husband and joked that it could contain a rifle.
Imagine her surprise when it actually did, or at least contained something that looked like a rifle.
Speaking to The New Paper yesterday, the 47-year-old woman, who declined to be named, said that she and her husband had gone to the beach at Sembawang Park at about 2am on Sunday after supper at a nearby coffee shop.
The couple were resting on a bench when they saw the man, who appeared to be in his 20s, wading into the water.
He looked through the bag and took out a bundle which was covered in layers of plastic bags.
Curious, her 50-year-old husband, a clerk, decided to take a closer look and made his way to the edge of the water.
Said the woman, an operations coordinator: "I joked with him, saying that maybe, it contained a rifle. My husband came back soon afterwards and said that I could be right.
"I went to the beach and saw an item which looked like a weapon. I was shocked."
The woman added that the man who retrieved the bag immediately called the police and two patrol cars arrived within minutes.
The couple then decided that they had seen enough and made their way home to Woodlands.
Responding to queries from TNP, the police said that they were informed about the trash bag at about 2.40amon Sunday.
Preliminary investigations revealed that an object shaped like a rifle was found in it.
Other items were also found in the bag, but the spokesman did not disclose what they were.
Investigations are ongoing.
