A shooting instructor from Arizona has died from an accidental shot in the head by his 9-year-old student.

According to a press release from the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office, Charles Vacca, 39, died of his injuries on Monday after being airlifted to a Las Vegas hospital.

The young girl was learning how to fire an automatic Uzi, a submachine gun, when the recoil caused her to lose control and sent the weapon flying over her head towards Vacca.

Vacca, who was married and was a well-liked veteran, was an instructor at Bullets and Burgers.

The outdoor shooting range, about 40 km away from Las Vegas, allows children between the ages of 8 and 17 to shoot if accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The girl was at the range with her parents, according to Fox 5.

KLAS News spoke to the operator of the range, Sam Scarmardo, who said,"We really don't know what happened," he said.

"Our guys are trained to basically hover over people when they're shooting. If they're shooting right-handed, we have our right-hand behind them ready to push the weapon out of the way. And if they're left-handed, the same thing."
