She was not in the car or the taxi that crashed.

But a 44-year-old woman lies in hospital after a horrific accident in Geylang this morning.

The long-haired pedestrian, believed to be Malaysian, was walking along Sims Way at about 12.25am when tragedy struck.

Witnesses said a black Toyota sedan had tried to swerve after a taxi stopped to let the passenger alight at a bus stop.

But the Toyota ended up crashing into the taxi and veered left onto the pavement. It then rammed into the woman who was standing on the pavement.

The car — with the woman on its bonnet — came to a stop 20 metres away.

Taxi driver Benny Tay, 41, was driving past the accident scene when he saw the woman lying injured on the ground.

He immediately stopped his taxi and went to help.

Seeing that the woman was bleeding and her legs were bent in an unnatural position, he told a passer-by to call for an ambulance.

“It was terrifying. I was so scared. There was so much blood on the road,” Mr Tay told The New Paper in Mandarin.

“Most of us passers-by didn’t know what to do. I’m not medically trained so it was best to leave her and not move her.”

Mr Tay added that the bonnet of the black Toyota was badly dented.

Cabby Zheng Mingfeng, 41, told Shin Min Daily News the woman was lying face-down after the impact.

"Blood was gushing from the back of her head and she had no response."

A police spokesman said the woman was taken unconscious to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

He added: "The 28-year-old car driver has been arrested... and police investigations are ongoing."

Mr Tay was still affected by the incident yesterday evening when he spoke to TNP.

“This incident has reminded me to be more careful on the roads. I’m still feeling the stress after seeing what happened.

“I will take more care of myself and others when driving,” he said.
