He gets tired when victim puts up fight
Cleaner lures maid to multi-storey carpark and tries to rape her
He approached the maid and lied that there was a fight involving a another maid nearby.
Fearing that one of her friends was involved, she followed him to a Woodlands multi-storey carpark one morning in November, 2013.
After luring her there, he slapped, pushed and bit her before pinning her onto the ground in an attempt to rape her.
He also sexually violated her with his finger.
But after much struggling, he became tired and gave up.
For the attempted rape and sexually violating her with his finger, Mohd Nurul Islam Md Hatem Ali, 33, a Bangladesh national, was given six years' jail and eight strokes of the cane yesterday.
Another charge of outraging the woman's modesty by kissing her was taken into consideration for sentencing.
Court papers said the victim, a foreign national working as a maid, was at an eatery in Woodlands buying breakfast for her employer's family at about 9am on Nov 2, 2013.
This was when Mohd Nurul Islam, who worked as a cleaner, approached her and told her there was a fight between a Bangladeshi and a maid on the fourth storey of a nearby multi-storey carpark.
She followed him but no one was there.
When she tried to leave, he pulled her hair from behind, dragged her to a corner and pushed her against a wall.
He then hugged her from behind, touched her breasts and kissed her.
He also pulled down her shorts and panties even as she tried to pull them back up.
When she tried to push him away, he bit her lower lip and slapped her.
He pleaded with her to have sex with him for five minutes, but she refused.
Mohd Nurul Islam then pinned the victim onto the ground.
This time, he forcefully removed her shorts and panties, and tossed them out of her reach to prevent her from escaping.
He then tried to rape her while caressing and touching her.
But she struggled violently and used her thighs to prevent him from doing so.
Mohd Nurul Islam then sexually violated her with his finger.
After a few more minutes of struggling, he became exhausted and gave up.
He picked up her clothing, threw it at her and told her to leave. She quickly put on her clothes and dashed home.
She told her employer and his family what had happened after they found her crying and in distress.
They made a police report and she was taken to National University Hospital, where she was found to have suffered bruises and what appeared to be a bite mark.
'BRAZEN'
Deputy Public Prosecutor Lee Zu Zhao said Mohd Nurul Islam had committed his crime "in a brazen manner, in a residential area", reported The Straits Times.
He added that Mohd Nurul Islam had used violence above what was necessary, as "he was strong enough to overpower her without having to slap or bite her".
In his mitigation, Mohd Nurul Islam said he was sorry and asked for the lightest possible sentence so he could return to Bangladesh to look after his parents.
For each charge of attempted rape or sexually penetrating the victim with his finger, Mohd Nurul Islam could have been jailed for up to 20 years, fined or caned.
