Hotline caller concerned after seeing photo of baby scalded by hot oil

As a parent, I can relate to the story. I saw Baby Aafaa's picture and it reminded me of my two-year-old son, who loves to enter the kitchen by himself.

She was shocked to see photos of a toddler with a swollen red face when she was scrolling through Facebook last month.

Teacher Nur Surya Mazlan, 30, also read from the post that 15-month-old Aafaa Zuhayr Muhammad Al-Khair, was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) on for second-degree burns after he was scalded by hot oil.

She shared the news with her husband, Mr Najib Siddik, 33, who decided to call The New Paper (TNP) hotline.

The father of three, aged six, two and two months, said: "As a parent, I can relate to the story. I saw Baby Aafaa's picture and it reminded me of my two-year-old son, who loves to enter the kitchen by himself.

"By sharing the news, I hope I can highlight the importance of kitchen safety, especially when kids are around."

The report was published last Tuesday.

Another hotline caller, civil servant Norman Jalal, 38, was driving home at around 8.30am last Friday when he saw two fire engines and an ambulance at the foot of a block near his flat.

He looked up and saw firemen trying to put out a fire at a unit on the fourth storey of a block at Clementi West Street 1 .

He decided to call the TNP hotline to report the incident.

It was reported that three neighbours helped the woman, Madam Norisla Ammran, 27, and her son, who were in the unit when the fire broke out.

The four-year-old boy escaped unscathed, but Madam Norisla was taken to National University Hospital (NUH) for severe smoke inhalation.

The report was published on Saturday.

When he found out about the kind-hearted act of the three neighbours, he said: "I think it's great that these neighbours came to help them in the event of an emergency. It warmed my heart to know that I am living in a good community."

For their tip-offs, Mr Najib and Mr Norman will each receive a $100 Pizza Hut voucher.
