Kidnap phone scams on the rise

This article is more than 12 months old

More people are falling prey to kidnap phone scams, where victims receive a phone call from a conman demanding for ransom in return for the release of a 'kidnapped' relative.

In 2014, the number of people scammed tripled to 40 from 13 the year before.

The Straits Times reported that the number of cases continued to rise this year. In the first six months of this year, 22 people have already fallen victim, losing a total of $98,100.
