Shanmugam chides website

This article is more than 12 months old

Home Affairs and Law Minister K. Shanmugam has accused sociopolitical website States Times Review of "outright falsehoods" in an anonymous article it posted on Friday (Oct 21).

It was "a complete fabrication", Mr Shanmugam said in a Facebook post yesterday. He added that he intends to make a police report.

The article claimed he said at a closed-door Institute of Policy Studies forum on Friday that "Eurasians are considered Indian under the Presidential candidacy law".

He was said to have made the remark "when the President of the Eurasian Association of Singapore, Benett Theseira, criticised the definition of Eurasian in the candidacy regulations". The article claimed Mr Shanmugam said "Indians outnumbered Eurasians 20 to 1", making it difficult for a Eurasian to be president.

But Mr Shanmugam wrote: "All of this is completely false. During my session which lasted 90 minutes, I said nothing of the sort attributed to me, about Eurasians." He added that he had not been asked about Eurasians at all, and there had been no discussion on the matter.
