Singapore orchid hybrid to be named after tennis star - will it be Sharapova, Williams or Wozniacki?

This article is more than 12 months old

For ten days, Singapore will host the world's top eight tennis players who will be taking part in the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Finals in Singapore.

Yes, that means more photos of the likes of Serena Williams, Caroline Wozniacki and Maria Sharapova at the selfie-place of choice - atop the Marina Bay Sands hotel.

Unfortunately, these stars will leave Singapore once the tournament is over.

But the champions will be here in Singapore forever. Well, kind of.

The Singapore Botanic Gardens will be naming an orchid hybrid after the singles winner, echoing a practice where orchids are often named after State Visitors and VIPs.

The orchid hybrid is a Dendrobium Pramat x Burana Charming (below).

Will there be an orchid named Dendrobium Sharapova? Maybe it could even be called Charming Caroline Wozniacki?

While this is not the first time orchids are being named after famous people, this will be the first time Singapore will be naming an orchid after a sports personality.

Here are other VIPs that have had orchids named after them:

1. Doritaenopsis Sir Elton John

2. Dendrobium Memoria Princess Diana: She died before her trip to Singapore where the orchid was scheduled to be named after her. When Prince William and his wife visited Singapore in 2012, they also paid a visit to the orchids named after Princes Diana.

3. Vandaenopsis Nelson Mandela

4. Vanda William Catherine (named after the the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge - Prince William and Kate Middleton)
