Buying lots of newspapers is key to his success

Even after a gruelling day of ferrying passengers to and fro in his taxi, his day is not done when he gets home.

Instead, Mr Wari Ismail, 58, spends half an hour every night cutting out football jerseys for The New Paper's Match & Score contest.

He stores them safely in a plastic bag in his room so he can refer to them later in the week when the winning combinations are published.

"I will come home in the evening and cut them out, and then put the numbered ones in sequential order," he told The New Paper.

"It takes a long time."

The effort has paid off.

WINNERS: Jackpot prize winners Rahimi Assar (above), Lee Ah Choy and Kamarulzaman Osman each won $340 in cash yesterday. Mr Kamarulzaman won an extra $50 for being a TNP Superkaki.

Mr Wari has won cash prizes for the contest on no less than four separate occasions.

After winning a $2,000 jackpot and a $100 prize two days before his birthday, he found that luck was on his side again. He won another $100 the next day and $100 on his birthday itself.

He then won $200 more the following week.

In total, he has won $2,500 - more than the $1,500 a month he says he can earn as a cab driver - from Match & Win, and he plans to spend the extra cash on his family's Hari Raya celebrations.

The secret of his success?

"I buy at least 10 copies of The New Paper every day," he said, adding that there are days when he buys as many as 12 copies.

"I get them mostly from 7-Eleven and NTUC FairPrice after dropping passengers off in different places."

Laughing ruefully, Mr Wari described how close he came to winning the jackpots three nights in a row last week.

"(On) Friday, Saturday and Sunday I was short of just one number for the jackpot," he said.

"But maybe (I'll be) fifth time lucky this week."

Over the weekend, Mr Peter Ambrose, 58, scored the top prize two days in a row.

FINAL WEEK

This is the final week of TNP's Match & Score contest.

Collect the jerseys from The New Paper editions from Monday to Thursday.

New printing technology allows each copy of TNP to have a different combination of jerseys, which feature either countries or numbers.

Then, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, compare the jerseys you've collected with the winning combinations printed in TNP to see if they match.

On each of these three days, there are $100 and $200 cash prizes available, as well as a $1,000 jackpot cash prize, which will snowball to the next day if not claimed on the day.

Look out for extra jerseys in Thursday's (July 7) paper.
