While trying to avoid a collision with another car in front of her, she swerved to the left and hit two motorcyclists, killing one of them.

In the accident at around 8.15am on March 31 last year, civil servant Nur Azkiya Ahmad's car collided with bikers Jeremy Lim Yew Leong, 34, and Muhamad Hairin Wahid, 32.

Mr Lim's motorcycle hit another car, causing him to be flung onto the road and into the path of a moving prime mover.

He was killed when it ran over him.

Nur Azkiya, now 34, was sentenced to three weeks' jail and banned from driving for five years yesterday after pleading guilty to one count of causing a death by performing a negligent act.

A second charge of causing hurt to Mr Muhamad Hairin due to her negligence was taken into consideration.

Nur Azkiya, a civilian officer with the Police Training Command, is appealing against the sentence and is out on $15,000 bail.

She had held a valid driving licence since October 2001.

HEAVY TRAFFIC

On March 31 last year, she was driving along the extreme right lane of the Kranji Expressway (KJE) towards the Pan Island Expressway (PIE) at a speed of around 80kmh.

There was heavy traffic on all the lanes at the time.

She was driving behind a red car which had stopped due to the congestion. The driver of the red car was not named in court documents.

Nur Azkiya did not slow down. When she realised the red car had stopped, she braked and swerved to the left to avoid a collision.

Her car hit the two motorcycles and Mr Lim's bike was pushed into the centre lane where it collided with another car.

He was flung off his bike and thrown onto the extreme left lane of the KJE.

The force caused him to slide under the undercarriage of the prime mover. The vehicle ran over the biker's torso before stopping.

Mr Lim was rushed to the National University Hospital but by then, he had no pulse and was not breathing.

He was pronounced dead about 1 1/2 hours later.

The court heard that Nur Azkiya had failed to keep a proper distance from the red car in front of her.

For causing a death by performing a negligent act, she could have been jailed up to two years and fined.
