Elderly man dies after bus hits him in Toa Payoh
An elderly man died after after he was hit by a SBS Transit bus outside Toa Payoh bus interchange early on Thursday (July 7).
The service 235 bus was turning left from the interchange to Toa Payoh Lorong 6 around 6.15am when the accident occurred.
The New Paper understands the victim, who was in his 60s, was crossing the road towards Toa Payoh Town Park.
There is a traffic light pedestrian crossing to the left of the interchange exit on Toa Payoh Lorong 6, but it is unclear if the light was green at the time, or whether the victim was using the crossing.
A Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) spokesman said it received a call at 6.20am, and paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene.
He was wearing a grey dry-fit top and a pair of black sweatpants, and is believed to be going to the park for morning exercise, reported Chinese daily Lianhe Wanbao.
He did not have any identification on him.
When TNP arrived at 8.45am, the body was still at the edge of the road, under a blue tent.
The bus was still in the middle of the three-lane road. A pool of blood could be seen underneath it near the rear exit doors.
Traffic and bus services were disrupted for about two hours until the bus was towed away around 9.20am.
SBS Transit staff members were directing pedestrians at the interchange exit.
The police said they received a call at 6.24am about the accident.
The bus driver, a 36-year-old man, was arrested, and investigations are ongoing, a spokesman said.
A woman, who works at Ananas Cafe at the interchange, told TNP that she did not see the accident but later saw four people removing the body from below the bus.
An elderly customer at the cafe said in Hokkien: “Can you imagine? His family members have to hear from the police that he died.”
Ms Tammy Tan, senior vice-president of corporate communications for SBS Transit, said: “We are very saddened and sorry that this has happened.
“Our immediate priority is to get in touch with the family of the deceased and to render assistance. We are also assisting the police with their investigations.”
