Five motorists charged with traffic offences that injured other road users
A car driver allegedly did not keep a proper lookout while making a right turn in Loyang, which led to a collision with a motorcycle, seriously injuring the rider.
Low Boon Cheong, 41, was charged on Wednesday with one count of driving without reasonable consideration for other road users, resulting in grievous hurt.
He was one of five motorists, aged between 25 and 66, who were charged on Wednesday with driving without due care or reasonable consideration, causing grievous hurt.
According to court documents, the motorcycle rider – a 28-year-old Malaysian man – had the right of way before the collision. It occurred at about 3.30am on June 10 in Toh Avenue, off Loyang Avenue, towards the junction of Upper Changi Road North.
In a separate incident, Mohamed Nassir Haron, 66, was allegedly not careful when he drove his car towards the zebra crossing on the Bukit Panjang Road slip road into Upper Bukit Timah Road on Jan 14 at about 10.30 pm.
He allegedly hit a cyclist who was using the zebra crossing, injuring him.
According to court documents, Nassir was previously convicted of two speeding offences and faces a stiffer punishment if convicted.
On Wednesday, he was handed one charge of driving without due care and attention, causing grievous hurt.
The third driver, Syafeeq Hammadi Sharin Shaifuddin, 25, had allegedly hit a 47-year-old man and a 43-year-old woman on Feb 16 at about 8.30pm in Zion Road.
He had allegedly driven without reasonable consideration for other road users by failing to exercise care when making a right turn.
He was handed a charge of driving without reasonable consideration, causing grievous hurt, and another of driving without reasonable consideration, causing hurt.
In the fourth case, Sabnani Akshay Arvin, 28, had allegedly ridden his motorcycle without reasonable consideration for other people on June 8 at about 8.30 am at the unsignalised cross-junction of Loyang Lane and Loyang Drive.
This resulted in a collision with a motorcycle, injuring the rider.
The fifth offender – a 65-year-old lorry driver – had allegedly made a right turn into Senoko Road on Jan 5 and collided with a motorcyclist who was travelling straight from the opposite direction and had the right of way.
The lorry driver was charged with driving without due care and attention, causing grievous hurt.
According to the latest mid-year traffic situation report released by the police in September, accidents that resulted in injuries rose by 11.1 per cent, from 3,125 in the first half of 2022 to 3,471 in the same period in 2023.
Those convicted of driving without due care or reasonable consideration, causing grievous hurt, can be fined up to $5,000, jailed up to two years, or both.
For second or subsequent convictions, motorists can be fined up to $10,000, jailed for up to four years, or both.
Those convicted of driving without due care or reasonable consideration, causing hurt, can be fined up to $2,500, jailed for up to 12 months, or both.
In the case of a second or subsequent conviction, the offence carries a fine of up to $5,000, a jail term of up to two years, or both.
