Man arrested for attempting to extort $500k from Standard Chartered bank
A 35-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly attempted to extort $500,000 from Standard Chartered Bank.
In a statement yesterday, the police said the bank made a police report on Sept 27 after receiving anonymous e-mails demanding half a million dollars.
The e-mails claimed that the sender had confidential information belonging to the bank and would not leak it if the amount was paid.
Officers from Bedok Police Division were able to establish the identity of the suspect and arrested him along Kovan Road on Sunday.
The police said the man is believed to have used multiple fake accounts to send the e-mails, and he also allegedly used overseas mobile numbers and virtual private network services in an attempt to hide his identity.
Several laptops and mobile phones have been seized from the man.
He will be charged today with attempted extortion.
If found guilty, he can be jailed for two to five years and caned.
