Man jailed for having sex with 13-year-old
A 24-year-old man was jailed for two years yesterday for having sex with a 13-year-old girl, who later became pregnant.
Vellakkannu Raja, an Indian national who was working here as a construction worker, pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual penetration of the minor, who cannot be named due to a gag order.
Vellakkannu first met the girl at Changi Beach in late 2014.
She passed him her mobile phone number and the two kept in regular contact.
They met up in February last year at Changi Village before walking to a deserted part of Changi Beach, where they had unprotected sex.
The girl's mother found out about their relationship and warned them to stay away from one another.
But Vellakkannu and the girl continued seeing each other. They had sex on two more occasions at Punggol Waterway Park between August and October last year.
CONFIRMED PREGNANCY
In January this year, the girl told her mother that she had missed her period for several months.
Tests at KK Women's and Children's Hospital confirmed she was 13 weeks' pregnant.
The hospital called the police.
The girl told Vellakkannu what had happened and they agreed he should flee the country to avoid arrest.
After telling his employers he had family matters back home, Vellakkannu tried to leave Singapore, but was arrested at Changi Airport.
The girl went for an abortion when she was 23 weeks' pregnant, a week away from the maximum gestation period allowed in Singapore.
For each charge of sexual penetration of a minor, Vellakkannu could have been jailed up to 10 years and fined.
