Man killed after lorry smashes into stationary trailer
Lorry crashes into stationary trailer on Changi Coast Road
He had stopped by the side of the road to check the map, but seconds later, there was a bang behind him.
Startled, the driver who wanted to be known as Mr Sutham, 56, who was transporting a boat on his trailer, turned to find that a lorry had crashed into the back of his vehicle.
"I was shocked, I don't know how the driver could have not seen my trailer," he said.
A Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) spokesman said it received a call about the accident at Changi Coast Road at 12.15pm yesterday.
A 32-year-old man was found trapped in the passenger seat of the lorry.
He had to be extricated from the tangle of metal by the SCDF using hydraulic tools. He was pronounced dead by an on-site doctor.
The victim's father was at the scene at about 3pm with other relatives to identify the body. The group was visibly upset and the father needed assistance walking after seeing his son's body.
They later confronted the lorry driver and were seen having a heated argument.
UPSET
At one point, a man believed to be a relative of the victim shouted at the driver: "Is whatever you say now going to bring him back? Is whatever you say or do now worth a life?"
The father then bent over at the side of the road and threw up.
The family declined to comment, except to say they were very upset and were unsure of what to do.
The 51-year-old lorry driver was arrested for causing death by a negligent act.
There were no other reported injuries and police investigations are ongoing.
