MP Louis Ng's daughter at home recovering from Kawasaki disease

This article is more than 12 months old

The daughter of Nee Soon GRC MP Louis Ng was in hospital for two days, after she was diagnosed with Kawasaki disease.

The disease usually affects children under four years of age, and causes inflammation of the blood vessels.

Katie, who is 18 months old, was admitted to KK Women's and Children's Hospital on Friday, Mr Ng told The Straits Times yesterday.

Her parents said she had a fever, rash and red eyes.

"She is responding well to the treatment, and hopefully will be discharged later today. There will be follow-up appointments next week to make sure the disease doesn't affect her heart," he said.

Mr Ng gave an update on Katie's condition in a Facebook post.

"Brave little Katie is finally home. It'll take a bit of time for her to recover fully from the Kawasaki disease."

Symptoms of Kawasaki disease include high fever, red or sore eyes, dry red lips, a red tongue, skin rash and swollen lymph nodes in the neck.

While most children with Kawasaki disease recover with no problems, about 5 per cent to 20 per cent may develop heart complications.

Katie's general practitioner suspected the disease when her parents brought her in last week.

Mr Ng said the disease is not contagious and the rest of the family is fine. Katie has a twin, Poppy. Mr Ng and his wife, Amy, also have a four-year-old daughter, Ella.

In his post, he apologised to residents for missing some events to look after his child.
