Three coach passengers thrown out in horror crash on Malaysian highway

Three people were killed and 14 others hurt when a coach on its way to Singapore rammed into the back of a lorry carrying steel rods on a Malaysian expressway early yesterday morning.

The crash happened around 2.30am on the North-South Highway. The coach from Kuala Lumpur was operated by Singapore's Grassland Express and Tours.

The coach was carrying 25 passengers and had two drivers. Most of the passengers are Malaysian. Six or seven of them are reportedly Singaporeans.

Three passengers, a man and two women, were thrown out of the vehicle upon impact, China Press reported. All three were seated at the front of the bus.

One of the two women, Ms Lai Wenqing, 25, died on the spot. She was a Malaysian citizen and a Singapore Permanent Resident.

Ms Lai worked in a tech company in Singapore and was originally from Kulai, Johor. Her mother was also on the bus, but they sat separately.

The pair had arrived in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday morning to visit relatives.

The other two passengers who were reportedly thrown out of the bus were Ms Lim Siew Kee, 60, and Mr Yao Ouyang, 30, reported China Press. The two Malaysians died on the way to hospital.

TAKEN TO HOSPITAL

The 54-year-old bus driver, along with 13 others with injuries, were taken to a hospital in Batu Pahat and Hospital Muar.

An employee at Hospital Muar told The New Paper that 12 people arrived at the hospital around 4.30am. Three were warded, and the other nine have been discharged.

According to Chinese daily Lianhe Wanbao, four Singaporeans were injured in the accident.

Three were from a family of four, comprising a Singaporean father, Malaysian mother and two children. They were travelling with their Indonesian maid

The 28-year-old lorry driver, who escaped unharmed, told reporters at the scene that the rods had pierced through the windshield and damaged almost half of the bus.

A representative of Grassland Express and Tours was in Malaysia to offer assistance.
