UK extradition decision of suspect in StanChart robbery case on Aug 29
Singapore will find out on Aug 29 if it can extradite the man suspected of robbing a Standard Chartered Bank branch here two years ago.
That is when David James Roach, a Canadian national, will appear in a London court to hear its decision on his extradition case, a spokesman for the Westminster Magistrates' Court revealed yesterday.
He has been held in Britain since Jan 11 after he was arrested by the British authorities in London, following a request from Singapore.
An earlier statement by the Attorney-General's Chambers and the Ministry of Home Affairs said assistance had been sought from the British authorities to arrest Roach with a view to his "eventual extradition".
Singapore has an extradition treaty with Britain.
When Roach appeared in the London court in February, he had said that he would contest the extradition to Singapore. He is accused of robbing StanChart's Holland Village branch of $30,000 on July 7, 2016.
He allegedly handed the teller a note with his demands, then fled to Bangkok with the money on the same day.
He was arrested at a backpacker hostel three days later and was held in remand in Bangkok.
Singapore has no extradition treaty with Thailand.
On June 6 last year, he was sentenced to 14 months in jail in Thailand for violating money laundering and Customs laws by bringing loot into the country.
Roach was reportedly in transit in London while being deported to Canada when he was arrested.
