Woman gets five days' detention for lying about rape
She wanted to get back at her boyfriend for spending time with another woman.
So she met up with another man and had sex with him in his home.
When her boyfriend questioned her later, she lied that she had been raped, to avoid revealing that she had cheated on him.
She maintained her story even when police officers interviewed her.
But the truth eventually surfaced.
Yesterday, Tan Gan Hui, 22, was sentenced to a short detention order of five days for giving false information to the police at Ang Mo Kio Division headquarters.
The short detention order is intended to be less disruptive and stigmatising than jail. It means the prison time will not be reflected in a criminal record.
Court papers said a spiteful Tan had got in touch with a former schoolmate, who cannot be named due to a gag order, through Facebook on March 1.
They exchanged contact numbers and met at his flat, where they had sex in his room. She did this in retaliation after her boyfriend spent time with another woman, court papers said.
The next day, Tan lied to him that she had been bullied and raped by her former schoolmate.
The boyfriend took her to Sembawang NPC, where she reported that she had been raped.
But she later admitted that she had lied while being interviewed by an officer of the Criminal Investigation Department's Serious Sexual Crime Branch.
Her lawyer, Mr Rajan Supramaniam, who was assigned under the Criminal Legal Aid Scheme, said in mitigation that Tan was genuinely remorseful.
He said she had committed the acts in a mixture of anger, hurt and a sense of rejection, as well as because of a failed relationship.
Tan could have been jailed for up to six months and/or fined up to $1,000.
