Home-grown music wave xinyao, or Singapore songs, takes the spotlight at next year's Chingay.

"This is the first time xinyao will be presented independently as a segment by itself in the Chingay parade," said Liang Wern Fook, 52, one of the movement's pioneers.

"Chingay has been about the multi-racial and multi-cultural parts of society, and xinyao is definitely one of the most important aspects of Singaporean culture."

Liang composed and wrote the Chinese lyrics to next year's theme song, Xin Zhong De Cai Hong. The English version, Rainbow In Our Hearts, was penned by television writer-director Goh Ming Siu. The parade will have its 45th anniversary next year. Chingay 2017 will take place on Feb 10 and 11 at 8pm at the F1 Pit Building.

Tickets are priced from $28.50 to $60 and are available through Sistic. - THE STRAITS TIMES
