Singapore's disability-friendly public transport wins praise from foreigners
Singapore's public transport system has been receiving some praise from a foreign netizen.
Xiaohongshu user Jiu Zhen Mei Tree from China, took to the platform to share her admiration for how accessible Singapore's buses are for people with disabilities.
In her post, Ms Jiu describes seeing people with disabilities independently navigating the buses here, which she found striking.
What stood out the most to her was the design of the buses - specifically the wheelchair ramps.
When a wheelchair user is boarding or alighting, the bus captain halts new passengers from boarding, steps outside, and manually lowers a ramp that leads directly to the wheelchair space. This ensures a smooth, easy transition for those with mobility challenges.
The Chinese netizen didn't just admire the buses but also highlighted the kind-heartedness of Singaporeans.
She shared how a bus captain took the time to assist a wheelchair user to alight, with fellow commuters patiently waiting their turn without any sign of frustration.
This thoughtful behaviour, Ms Jiu noted, showcased the strong sense of empathy and inclusivity ingrained in Singapore's culture.
Many others in the comments section echoed similar sentiments, sharing how Singapore's commitment to inclusivity has extended beyond transport.
One user mentioned how older public housing now includes lifts on every floor, making it more accessible for both the elderly and those with disabilities.
Others reflected on how such initiatives allow people with disabilities and seniors to get out and enjoy the outdoors more, which they believe benefits well-being and promotes a more caring society.
Another user pointed out how these efforts are also helpful for parents with prams.
