He had uploaded a quote from Russian poet Vladimir Maiakovski which said "It is better to die from vodka than from boredom".

In a tragic twist of events, that is exactly what killed 23-year-old Humberto Moura Fonseca.

The University of Julio de Mesquita student had drank 25 shots of vodka in less than 60 seconds during a drinking competition in Bauru, Brazil.

Vodka typically has about 40 per cent of alcohol in it.

His friend Rodrigo Pancetti, 23, said he and the other participants were "really up for it".

"I never thought that would become reality. But once he had finished he said he felt ill and suddenly collapsed."

Medical staff rushed Fonesca and three others to the hospital but he died along the way. Doctors have confirmed that it was due to alcohol poisoning.

The other three were still in intensive care.

Police are now looking to charge the two students who organised the event with homicide.

"Two fourth year students at the university have been arrested for organising the event without a licence and for potentially causing the death of the student."

A spokesman for the university said, "We very much regret the death of this young man and our condolences go out to his family and friends."

"We would like to remind students that drinking alcohol in the university is banned."
