Another poster read: "A tearful tribute to the leader who gave us life. Mr Lee Kuan Yew."

Mr Elaya Raja, who has worked in Singapore as a construction worker for 12 years, sent TNP a photo of a banner that was put up in his home town of Thiruvarur in Tamil Nadu.

"I always admire Singapore and the man who created it," he said. "I heard a lot about him from my father."

Football clubs around the world have also paid tribute to the elder statesman through Facebook.

German football club Borussia Dortmund offered its "sincere condolences", while English Premier League's Chelsea Football Club called Mr Lee "a great man and leader" and said it was "saddened to hear of the passing of Singapore’s founding father".
