Toddler, 4-year-old drown in hole at Penang construction site
A toddler and her four-year-old brother drowned after falling into a two metre-deep hole at a construction site in Bukit Mertajam, Penang.
Ms Anisatunnajah Mohd Esa, 32, said she could not understand how 18-month-old Nur Shazreen Rahizal and Muhammad Shazriel Naufal could have wandered about 50m away from their house.
She said she last saw them playing with their seven-year-old brother and 10-year-old sister in the house on Saturday afternoon.
Her lorry driver husband, Rahizal Md Lazim, 35, was taking a nap.
She told The Star: “Suddenly, I noticed that Shazreen and Shazriel were not there and started looking for them.”
She said her son who helped her in the search suddenly shouted that his little sister was stuck in a hole.
Pulled children out
Ms Anisatunnajah said she and Mr Rahizal ran over and with other family members and neighbours and pulled both the children out.
They were taken to hospital but were pronounced dead, the report said.
Because of the rain, the holes at the construction site were filled with water and the children could have slipped into one.
