Tourists kicked off island after allegedly trying to burn quokka

This article is more than 12 months old

Would you ever try to burn something that looks like this?

Well, two tourists from France tried to while they were holidaying on Rottnest Island off the west coast of Australia. Now they've been charged with one count of animal cruelty, reports ABC news.

On April 3, the two tourists had created a flame thrower by igniting an aerosol spray with a lighter.

They then singed a quokka with the flame.

The two men, aged 18 and 24, were questioned by Australian police and then evicted from the island, which is located just 30km away from Perth.

The police seized video evidence from the pair but police said that the video will not be released to the public.

Quokkas are small, endangered marsupials that can be found almost exclusively on Rottnest Island.

Their small and friendly nature make them popular with tourists who love taking selfies.
