Van overturns after accident with taxi, man arrested for drink driving

A 36-year-old man who was behind the wheel of a van that turned turtle following an accident in Lornie Road was arrested on Aug 10 for drink driving.

In response to The Straits Times' queries, the police said they were alerted to an accident involving a van and a taxi along Lornie Road towards Adam Road at about 5.35pm.

In photos of the aftermath of the accident, the van can be seen flipped upside down with shards of glass next to it.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force said it assessed three people for minor injuries. However, all three declined to be taken to the hospital.

Police investigations are ongoing.

If found guilty of drink driving, first time offenders can face a fine between $2,000 and $10,000, up to 12 months' jail, or both.

Repeat offenders meanwhile face a fine between $5,000 and $20,000, and up to two years' jail.

According to police statistics, there were 1,778 drink driving arrests made in 2024, a 6.9 per cent increase from 2023.

Although drink driving-related accidents dropped from 180 to 166 cases in the same time period, the number of fatal accidents linked to drink driving increased from 11 in 2023 to 12 in 2024.
