An police officer from the US California Highway Patrol (CHP) was caught on camera straddling a woman on the shoulder of a Los Angeles freeway and repeatedly punching her in the head.

According to NBC news, the video was shot on Tuesday by Mr David Diaz who estimated that the women took 15 hits directly to her head.

In the video, the woman, who is yet to be identified is seen trying to use her hands to protect her face as the officer rain blows onto her head.

Eyewitness Daina Tate told NBC's LA news affiliate that the woman was screaming during the whole incident.

"It was shocking, and you can't really call the cops on the cops." She said.

The CHP said in a statement to the media that they are aware of the video and they are looking into the incident.

The officer in question is now on "administrative leave".
