'Void deck night safari': Civet cat spotted crawling in drain at Commonwealth Ave
"Feed it coffee beans and track its droppings," one commented.
A resident at Commonwealth Avenue got an unexpected surprise when a civet cat was spotted crawling through a drain.
The 30-second video, uploaded on the Oct 21, and captioned "Civet cat spotted at 7A Commonwealth Avenue", has garnered more than 340 upvotes and 40 comments at press time.
In the clip, the civet can be seen scurrying along the drain, pausing occasionally to peek back at its surroundings.
According to the Animal and Veterinary Service, civets, also known as "musang" in Malay, are not cats but close relatives of mongooses. Commonly found in parks and urban areas across Singapore, civets are generally harmless and play a role in producing civet coffee.
'Personal luwak,' joked netizens
Some Reddit users found humour in the encounter. "Stalker cat doesn't like to be stalked," quipped one. "Void deck Night Safari," said another.
Many also shared their own sightings of civet cats around the island.
Others urged caution, warning against sharing exact locations to protect the animal. "Please don't post exact spots, poachers will try their luck," one wrote.
Many were also quick to note how distressed the civet appeared in the clip.
"Keep your distance, it's a wild animal. Don't go chasing after it like you did until it must hide in the drain and still get followed by your flashlight," said one.
A few couldn't resist making kopi-related jokes. Comments included: "Feed it coffee beans and track its droppings", "Eat its poop", and "Free kopi luwak".
