Woman feeding pigeons returns to Bishan, angers residents

The same woman was spotted feeding pigeons in June.

A woman known for feeding pigeons daily at a Bishan HDB block three months ago has reportedly resumed the practice, sparking complaints from frustrated residents about unsanitary conditions.

In June, STOMP reported on a woman who had been regularly feeding birds at Sin Ming Avenue for about a year.

A report from Shin Min Daily News confirmed the incident at Block 441. At the time, the woman claimed she was feeding chickens, but pigeons would "steal the food."

Recently, a 70-year-old reader, Ms Chen, told Shin Min that after the initial report, the woman's feeding activities became less frequent and the chickens were removed by the authorities.

However, the woman recently reverted to her old habit. "She previously said she was feeding chickens, but there are barely any chickens around here anymore. She is clearly feeding the pigeons," said Ms Chen.

A video provided by Ms Chen shows the woman standing along a walkway and scattering food on the ground as birds fly toward her.

The woman appears almost daily at 5pm, and the pigeons flock to her as soon as she arrives. "My domestic helper once tried to talk to her, but she got scolded," Ms Chen added.

The constant feeding has led to a surge in pigeon droppings, making the area unsanitary. "There's an open-air car park downstairs. Our cars are covered in bird droppings, and it's very dirty," Ms Chen said.

Under the Wildlife Act, first-time offenders who feed wild animals can be fined up to $5,000, while repeat offenders face a fine of up to $10,000.
