Woman finds rusty nail in walnut cake bought at Koufu
A woman was eating a slice of cake when she bit down on something hard.
At about 3pm on March 14, Ms Rong's husband bought for her a slice of walnut cake from Cookhouse by Koufu at Waterway Point.
"I took a bite and bit into something hard," the 36-year-old told Shin Min Daily News.
"I spat it out and saw that it was a rusty nail."
She immediately reported the matter to the manager, who refunded the $1.30 and gave her a bowl of dessert for free.
He also advised her to go to a nearby clinic for treatment and return to claim compensation.
"The doctor gave me a tetanus shot. The medical bill was about $105, which the manager paid for right away," said Ms Rong.
The following day, her head and body ached and her neck was stiff, so she saw a doctor again on March 16.
She returned to Koufu after that and the manager compensated her for the $112 medical bill.
The manager then told her that if there were any more claims for medical treatment, she had to contact Koufu via e-mail.
Koufu replied to her e-mail with a $100 gift card and apologised for the incident.
Ms Rong collected the gift card at Waterway Point.
However, she twisted her neck on March 18 and believed that it was related to the incident.
She consulted a TCM practitioner, who treated her with acupuncture, massage and medicine - for $126.
"I felt the TCM cost should also be borne by Koufu."
Ms Rong sent another e-mail to Koufu but had yet to receive a response.
She said she was unable to work for a week and that the TCM practitioner told her she would need a follow-up visit.
Ms Rong added that she felt traumatised by the incident and refused to buy any more cakes from the same shop.
